Why does SAP de-support 32-bit server operating systems for new releases from 2007 onwards?
SAP software can easily serve several hundred users on a single SAP application server. SAP software also handles jobs working on huge data sets (easily several GB). SAP introduced 64-bit capabilities into its architecture as early as 1998 in order to be able to serve both needs with optimal performance and greatest ease of use. Experiences gained in development and service and support clearly prove the benefits of 64-bit environments for SAP software. On 64-capable Unix and OS/400 platforms , de-support for 32-bit already happened with SAP release 6.20 and was very well received by our customers.

The 32-Bit de-support statement applies to server components like SAP application server, SAP WebAS Java or database. We will continue to support 32-Bit GUI and NetWeaver Developers Studio. Desktops components are used by a single user and do not have memory requirements comparable to typical server components.

No.You can continue to use your 32-bit servers for older SAP releases as long as the releases are in maintenance by SAP. See http://service.sap.com/maintenanceextension (SMP Login required) for general information on SAP maintenance policy. As a general rule: SAP Systems using an SAP kernel with release 6.40 or lower are not affected by the 32-Bit de-support.

I want to take advantage of 64-bit for my current SAP release. Is this possible?
Yes. SAP support for 64-bit is available as early as SAP R/3 4.6C. For Windows please consult PAM in http://service.sap.com/platforms -> Product Availability Matrix. For Linux please consult SAP Note 816097 and notes referenced therein. With SAP releases using SAP kernel 6.x we strongly recommend that you have one ore more 64-Bit servers in your system. For Unicode enabled SAP solutions or SAP solutions using SAP NW2004s, we strongly recommend that you run the complete system in 64-Bit mode. You can continue using existing 32-Bit servers for dialog users running less demanding SAP applications.

Is my hardware 64-Bit enabled?
For Linux, please consult our hardware partner’s lists on certified hardware. The list is available here on SDN and under http://www.sap.com/linux -> Platforms -> Hardware List. If you have questions or your hardware is no longer listed, please open a message under BC-OP-LNX-<hw-vendor> or send a mail to Linux@sap.com. For Windows, please consult the list of certified hardware under http://www.saponwin.com.

I want to run releases prior to 4.6C on a 64-Bit server.
There are no plans to certify SAP releases before 4.6C for the 64-Bit version of the operating systems in question. However we strongly recommend that you only purchase 64-Bit capable hardware and use the option to install the 32-Bit version of the operating system. This will allow you to take advantage of the hardware’s 64-Bit capabilities after an upgrade to a more recent SAP release.
